RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
