Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
