Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
